How to measure for artificial grass

Get the Perfect Fit

Before installing artificial grass, you will need to measure the area to be laid to calculate how much material you will need.

To accurately measure the area and determine how much artificial grass you will need, you can draw a scaled image of the garden onto graph paper. When working out your requirements, keep in mind the widths and decide which is the most economical way to cover the area, remembering that waste from some areas may cover smaller areas away from the main area.

How to Measure the Area for Artificial Grass

It is recommended to order slightly over your requirements to allow for size discrepancies and trimming joints.

Similarly, if there are obstacles within the lawn area such as a shed, tree, pond, or steps, you still need the same quantity of artificial grass so do not need to take into consideration obstacles when measuring the area.

You will also need to take into consideration how much joining and adhesive material is needed and how many joints you will need. You should aim to cover the area with the minimum number of joins on the shortest lengths.

For square and rectangular-shaped lawns, calculate the number of square meters by simply multiplying the width by the length. (length) x (width) = total square meter.

Example of how to measure your garden

Square/Rectangle Lawns

For square and rectangular-shaped lawns, calculate the number of square meters by simply multiplying the width by the length. (length) x (width) = total square meter.

Round Lawns

For round lawns, work out the diameter in metres and round up to the nearest even number for the width. This is due to roll widths being 2m or 4m. The length can use the accurate measurement of the diameter.

Angled Lawns

To calculate how many square metres of artificial grass is needed for angled or curved lawns, again, multiply the width and the widest point with the length at the longest point.

L Shaped Lawns

With L-shaped lawns, you should split the lawn into two sections. Multiply the width by the length of one section, the width and length of the second section, and add these together to generate the total square metres required.
