Buy cheap? Buy twice. This really rings true if you choose cheaper grass. The lower the yarn count, the sparser the thatch. And the sparser the thatch, the less durable the surface; the poorer the drainage and run-off; the less realistic the look.

How is yarn density measured?

Artificial grass has its origins in the textile industry. Measuring yarn density, the production of man-made fibres uses a scale called Dtex (or deci-tex). This measures grammes per 10,000 metres of yarn. In relation to your garden artificial lawn installation, the higher the Dtex, the thicker or wider the grass filament and overall thatch will be – and the higher the wear resistance, density to touch and life expectancy of the product.

There is a trade-off for garden and landscape artificial grass in terms of yarn density. A football field usually weighs in at 8,800 dtex – expecting to withstand prolonged and extremely heavy traffic and impact. Whilst a higher Dtex or density means a thicker, lusher surface, it also means more rigid fibres – so LazyLawn chooses the sweet spots for the optimum end results.

Is cheap artificial grass worth it?

Cheap artificial grass might be tempting but the lower upfront cost will almost definitely have significant downsides that will outweigh any initial saving.

Whilst cheap artificial grass may represent a cost-effective option for those on a tight budget or for temporary installations, if you are a homeowner looking for a manageable, realistic, long-lasting garden solution, it will serve you well to favour a good-looking, practical artificial lawn with a more considered investment in a higher grade artificial grass product.

A cheaper artificial lawn will cover a patch, sure. It will look presentable in the short-term, maybe. But it will be susceptible to wear and tear quickly, will flatten easily and will be more likely to fade over a short period. Think of a greengrocer’s window and that unrealistic, plasticky appearance – it just screams cheap (and not even cheerful).

Cheaper artificial grass products will more than likely have been manufactured and shipped for the Far East. Perhaps turn a blind eye to a heavier carbon footprint and a less stringent regime of material choice and safety considerations?

Low quality artificial grass will not withstand heavy play or foot traffic – let alone the rigours of typical British weather. Not only that, but an inferior artificial lawn tends to be made from a harder and rougher thatch of fibres which will lack padding and shock absorption. Certainly inappropriate for children or pets at play, a cheap artificial grass installation is likely to deteriorate and lead to dips, pooling, mould and odours, as well as potentially creating trip hazards.
